Greek Philosophers suffered acts of censorship. Protagoras had books burned as display of inappropriateness of ideas they include. Also they censored art that could corrupt morality of the nation.
In early Rome only political authority could freely speak, any others were severely punished. There were also restrictions on religious freedoms that Rome had. Imprisonment, large fines and death were some punishments used for not following the restrictions set forth by the Emperor or others in a higher class. The people that did most of the censoring in Rome were simply called Census'.

socrates.jpgDuring this time there were three main groups of people, which later was defined during the empire.

There were also very harsh punishments that went along with the Greek and Roman age. To punish Romans by death, they were to be stripped down naked, and were beat with a fork until they died. As you know, this is similar to what they did to crucify Jesus. Another deadly punishment was that they would toss a slave off a cliff and he would burn in lava. Treason tied together with the beating also.
Another punishment was by forgery, but the Greeks didn't use this to kill them. Forgery meant that if a slave was faking something or doin any other act wrong, usually they would kill the slaves, but slaves only.
Other punishments included fines, bonds, retaliation, banishment, strangling in prison and other wrong doings.Chucked_off_the_Tarpeian_Rock.JPG
